Malta Syracuse Race 2010
13 July 2010
This year's 50th edition of the 81 mile offshore classic co-organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and the Lega Navale Italiana attracted a staggering 104 yachts to the start line held outside Marsamxetto Harbour last saturday. Light westerlies were predicted for the channel crossing which were forecast to back but slightly strengthen during the very late evening between Capo Passero and Syracuse. Under bright sunshine and light westerlies all participants were off thanks to a well managed start. Initially, after rounding the windward mark off St Geroge's Bay, the longer boats pulled away from the fleet but only up to half way across the channel where the forecast southwesterlies had already started to kick in, unfortunately in very light form....Approaching Capo Passero the wind increased making for a fast reach up to the Noto area after which it kept backing but weakening making the final stretch of the race tedious for most, but the place were most positions were won or lost. In IRC Class B Beneteau boats took all the top spots 1st - Wolverine - First 34.7 - Mr Giacomo Dell' Aria 2nd - Ricomincio da Tre - First 34.7 - Mr. Miceli 3rd - Otra Vez - First 36.7 - Edward Gatt Floridia Well done to all crews.
