A team skippered by Sebastian Ripard from Malta has just been crowned UK National Champions in the J70 Class held in Plymouth, England. The J70 is a 4-man American designed keelboat, and is the fastest growing one-design keelboat ever, with over 1,100 sold inside 4 years world-wide.
Sebastian led a team that included his uncle, Jonathan Calascione, also from Malta, Fynn Sterrit, and Dave Kohler, who both hail from Scotland. The fleet included some of the best sailors in the UK, including Ben Saxton, who has just returned from the Rio Olympics where he placed 5th in the Nacra Class, James Peters, who is in the Team GB development squad for Tokyo 2020, and Fiona Hampshire, reigning RS800 National Champion.
The combined Maltese/British won a 10-race series in varied conditions, which included some lighter winds on the first day followed by some wet and very windy conditions on Saturday, with visibility down to 30 meters at times.
"We are delighted to have our first UK National win, which was one of our objectives at the beginning of the season when we embarked on this campaign. The Uk fleet is one the best in the World so it is a good test for us. Now we are heading off to Lago di Garda in Italy for the EuroCup next weekend. The Italian fleet is even tougher, so it will be excellent further preparation for our ultimate goal, which is to make it into the Top 10 at the World Championships in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, in 2017", remarked Sebastian Ripard.
