Vitruvius Yachts sees activity continue to grow in 2016

Yacht design and naval architecture company set to deliver two motoryachts in 2018.

Building on the successes of 2015, Vitruvius Yachts is set to enter the New Year with a raft of fully custom motoryacht projects on the drafting table and under construction at a number of world-class superyacht builders, ranging from 60m to 105m in length.


With three widely renowned motoryachts of 50m, 55m and 73m delivered by Italian yacht builder Picchiotti since 2010 and a completed conversion on the 71m explorer vessel M/Y Engima XK at Atlantic Refit Center, 2015 was a landmark year for Vitruvius Yachts.

The London-based design and naval architecture company, led by Veerle Battiau and Philippe Briand, signed two new build projects at prominent shipyards, including Feadship de Vries in Holland and Turquoise in Turkey. Vitruvius Yachts also announced a number of exciting new collaborative projects for design concepts, and is undertaking its first land-based project, a ‘land yacht’ yacht club based in Hong Kong, due for completion in 2017

Mrs Veerle Battiau, Director of Vitruvius Yachts, said of the year’s successes: “We are excited by what the future holds at Vitruvius Yachts. As well as our ongoing relationship with Picchiotti, this year we secured some wonderful new projects that look set to take our designs in new and challenging directions. The vision of our head designer Philippe Briand, complemented by the skills of his 10-strong team of design and naval architecture specialists, is now to be realised by world-class superyacht builders in three countries within the next three years.”

The project to be built at Feadship de Vries is a 58 m motoryacht, which is due for delivery in 2018 and will have a design reference of a ‘beach house on the water’.

The 80m VY80 is the first yacht to be commissioned under the newly rebranded Turquoise name, with expected completion in 2018. It will feature significant use of glass to give a sense of transparency and openness, while maintaining an intimate ‘family feeling’. The yacht will include a dedicated owner’s deck and accommodate 12 guests and 21 crew members. As with Grace E, the VY80 will offer a significant amount of space for wellness and fitness adjacent to the beach club, as well as 395sqm of exterior decks, an infinity swimming pool and two Jacuzzis.

Announced this autumn, the 105m Acquaintance concept from Vitruvius Yachts would be built by pedigree Dutch shipyard Oceanco, as a Passenger Yacht Code compliant motoryacht that stretches over an incredible 4,302 gross tonnes. It could accommodate up to 24 guests, double the maximum quota for superyachts built to the Large Yacht Code. In keeping with Vitruvius Yachts’ core philosophy of balance, efficiency and optimisation, Acquaintance has been designed to be 20 per cent more efficient than other motoryachts of its size. The waterside spa deck opens out onto a beach club-style lounging space with a skylight to the swimming pool above and a waterfall feature dividing the space.


It was another stellar award-winning year for Vitruvius Yachts, which entered 2015 with an already impressive line-up of accolades for its past projects, including its 73m flagship yacht, M/Y Grace E. Delivered in 2014 by Picchiotti, a part of the Perini Navi Group, the spectacular yacht has exceptional range and stunning design as well as environmentally conscious, innovative technology. Over the last 12 months, Grace E was bestowed with a further six awards from the International Superyacht Society, Showboats International and the World Superyacht Awards.


Although the design company works with a range of the world’s best superyacht builders, each Vitruvius Yachts vessel maintains a signature look, easily identifiable from a distance, with a focus on aesthetic balance and a robust profile featuring a wave-piercing bow shape. Below the waterline, Vitruvius Yachts are armed with the efficiency of the proprietary Briand Optimized Hull, which draws on the designer’s background creating some of the fastest sailing yachts in the world.


As a new addition to diversify the Vitruvius Yachts portfolio, the company was approached by investment company New World, which owns a yacht club in Hong Kong to realise their new facilities, as a land yacht in the quintessential ‘Vitruvius Yachts’ style. Briand and his team will be involved in every aspect of the club’s new set-up, including staff uniforms and designing the building to full yacht code standards and marine design philosophies.

Vitruvius Yachts is an international superyacht design company based in London. 50m M/Y Exuma, 55m Galileo G and 73m M/Y Grace E – all built in collaboration with Picchiotti (Perini Navi Group). The current range ability for the Vitruvius Yachts platform is 45 to 100+ metres. Each Vitruvius Yachts design is created to the owner’s specifications, with a number of boundary-pushing features that have included ice-class capabilities for polar cruising and diesel electric propulsion for improved. These constructions are conceived - in steel and aluminum - to offer the longest hull for a given volume and the shortest hull for this same given volume.
