Seminar organised by the Malta Maritime Law Association regarding shipping and Irregular Migration
21 October 2015
The following is a letter sent by Dr. Ann Fenech, the President of the Malta Maritime Law Association, on a subject which is in everybody's mind in various sectors all over Europe. The seminar is scheduled to be held on Friday 30th October 2015. Below the President's letter you will also find an invitation to the seminar for all those interested in this subject.
According to estimates from the International Chamber of Shipping, since January 2014, more than 1,000 merchant ships have helped rescue more than 65,000 people who crossed the Mediterranean. While the UN Convention clearly binds merchant ships to render assistance to any person found at sea in danger of being lost, the implications on international shipping are very complex and not always clearly regulated.
The Executive Committee of the Malta Maritime Law Association (MMLA) has decided to organize a seminar on “Irregular Migration and its Impact on International Shipping” to discuss this very topical issue with experts in the field.
I therefore invite all of you who are interested in maritime law to attend this seminar to be held on Friday, the 30th of October at 1600hrs at the Chamber of Commerce. (For more details please see attached advert - the full programme shall follow shortly)
