29 June 2012
The following news item is very important to many Maltese travellers who now have an alternative to the Malta/Pozzallo route operated by Virtu Ferries after SMAV pulled out of Malta and Grimaldi lines decided they will not transport passengers any more. Passengers now have a choice of two companies to cross over to the mainland with cars, caravans, camper vans, etc.
Mediterranean Maritime Services Limited (MMSL) is a newly registered company formed between VPJ Limited and Kucuk Shipping Limited to operate and manage a shipping line linking Libyan and Sicilian Ports to the Port of Valletta, Malta.
They have just launched a Cargo Service operating a weekly Ro-Ro Cargo vessel connecting the ports of Augusta Sicily to the Port of Valletta Malta and to the Libyan Ports of Tripoli and Misurata. The service is being operated using the Ro-Ro vessel ‘FEHIM BEY' which is based at the Valletta Gateway Terminal, Valletta Port, Malta.
The new Ro-Ro cargo service is operating twice weekly Malta-Sicily-Malta and once-a-week Malta-Libya. The scheduled service departs:-
• Malta for Augusta Sicily Monday and Wednesday evenings
• Augusta for Malta Tuesday and Thursday evenings
• Malta for Libya Friday evening
• Libya for Malta Sunday evening
The Ro-Ro vessel m.v. FEHIM BEY has a capacity of 105 TEUS/400 linear meters.
The vessel will be operating from the Valletta Gateway Terminal, Valletta Port Malta and will be calling at the ITSA Terminal in Augusta, Sicily.
In terms of the Libyan connection, arrangements have been made for the vessel to call at dedicated berths in both the Tripoli and Misurata Ports to ensure a quick turnaround.
