VETUS of Schiedam in the Netherlands has launched a new range of diesel fuel filters, especially developed for marine use. In common with most filters on the market, the bowl is transparent, so that water and dirt can be detected easily. However, in the approved versions, the transparent bowl meets the CE and ABYC fire tests, which is a world first! This means that the filters can now be located in the engine room instead of outside it.
These filters are split into 3 major groups:
1. Spin On filters without approval.
These filters can be used if they do not need not be located in the engine room. For service, the filter element and bowl are replaced as a single unit.
2. Spin On filters with approval.
These filters fulfill all CE and ABYC requirements, relating to installation in the engine room. One of the requirements is that the filter can withstand a fire test of 2.5 minutes.
3. Centrifugal filters with cartridge element.
These filter types are specially developed for engines of up to 5,000 hp and are available with up to 6 elements, all of which are individually isolatable. They are supplied with CE, ABYC and SOLAS (IMO) approval and are therefore suitable for commercial use. In common with the spin off filters, they also have a transparent bowl which withstands all stipulated fire tests.
Multiple filter systems are supplied with a vacuum gauge which advises when the filters are becoming clogged. The standard filtration is 10 microns for the spin on filters and 30 microns or 10 microns for the centrifugal models.
